Resources : Joshua Sergent

THE 'ART' OF UPCYCLING

Joshua Serjeant has a real passion for the environment, animals and natural things. He often calls us to look at shapes he sees in the cloud formations, at birds sitting on telephone lines "like music notes" (as he says) and textures on wood bark, pavements and shapes cast by shadows.

Joshua insists we don't throw away anything as he always feels he can upcycle these items and use them in his artworks. As a family, we are all passionate about our planet's well being and so totally support recycling and the utilization of these items in Joshua's innovative artworks. Joshua is also fortunate to be at Eden College where "going green" and saving our planet is a philosophy. Teachers at Eden, not only encourage high academic achievements, but also strongly support and nurture the artistic and creative strengths of its pupils.

Whatever the Art theme or project may be, Joshua utilises found, recycled, discarded, obsolete and broken objects which he incorporates into his artwork in an appropriate manner. These items vary from bottle caps, used nuts and screws, pieces of metal, wire mesh, electronic components and old studs or broken jewellery. He also keeps and uses toys from his youth, belts, remnants of fabrics, scraps of leather, rubbers floor mat off-cuts and carpeting.

Joshua works are of a sculptural nature. He is very ambitious and experimental in his ideas and use of materials. He is always ready to face the challenges of new territory and to master different techniques in the creative process. He visualises the final artwork from the beginning and no matter what it takes to get there, he enjoys the journey, stays focused and determined to, in his words, "accomplish the mission".

Global and Local Issues : Acting for Rhinos

This dance piece 'Locomoto' was performed by Eden dancers to raise rhino awareness at the Hilton Arts Festival over the weekend. Praise must go to Shelby and her team of dancers.

The rhino mural is being painted by ewok..100 rhinos to raise funds for Acting for Rhinos. Great work, yet again.

Thank you all who contribute to raise funds and awareness for "Acting for Rhinos"

Nature and Biodiversity : Grade 2 Tala Game Reserve

Today there was great excitement as we headed out ( with some enthusiastic parents!) at just after 7 am for Tala Game Reserve. We had a beautiful weather ..... it even got very hot!

My class started off with a short talk on insects

and then it was off into the bush to find them ..

This proved to be a little difficult as it has been so dry but one or two children managed to find termites and even a butterfly..... which they then used to book to identify. They loved it when they found the right butterfly!

Next it was on to see the 'Snake Man'! Oh my word - what wonderful snakes. They all learnt so much - me too! They even had the opportunity to hold them. For some children this was the first time!

After that we all needed a break, so out came the picnic lunches!

Having refreshed, we were ready for the game drive.

We were very lucky in our sightings. JC, our guide, explained many interesting things. These are just a few snippets of what we saw.

A baby zebra ... we learnt that a group of zebras are called a DAZZLE

The children were fascinated to see Miss Giraffe tongue in real life.

For many it was the first time to see a giraffe in the wild and what better than a baby!

We saw Zebras having sand baths ... this one had just finished!

Blue Cranes - our national bird.

A typical waterhole.

We sawthree beautiful Rhino - on World Rhino Day too

This one had had her horn poached. The story made the Rhino plight for us very real.

Rhino Dung

Ostrich chicks with Mum and Dad!

A baby Hippo - not often that we see them out of the water but we did!

We were all very sad to say goodbye but it had been a wonderful day.
