One of the things I so enjoy about teaching at Eden is the whole school atmosphere. Never is
it more apparent than at the Midmar mile swimming training time. Kids from 11 and upwards
to 18, of all shapes and sizes, of all abilities take to the pool accompanied by some die hard
teachers and one or two brave parents. Big kids encourage small kids, small kids encourage
staff, the permutations are endless and all under the tutelage and watchful eye of the amazing
Gill Rayner (Grade 2 teacher).
I have been swimming during the holidays in the Gym, but now school is open once again I am braving those early mornings and late afternoons to get into the school pool. Swimming this
past Sunday afternoon two Egyptian geese flew in to the pool and were most surprised to see
me and my partner churning up the water, for a while they joined in watching us curiously until
eventually they got bored and flew off. They were replaced by three Cape wagtails who wagged
their way around the edge of the pool keeping a wary eye on our laps.
When I tired and turned onto my back for a few lazy backstroke laps looking up was a delight, a kite was hovering over the pool and several pairs of lesser swallows were diving for insects
just above our heads. The cackle of the wood hoopoes and the cock of the Lorie from the trees
along the edge completed the feeling that the school truly is a garden of “Eden".
