Healthy eating : Yeast experiement in Grade 4

Our busy little scientists have completed various experiments during natural science lesson this term.
What great fun we had when we conducted our first experiment!!The aim of it was to see if yeast in its dormant state would come alive under the right conditions.
Each pupil conducted their own experiment by placing the powder yeast with warm water and sugar in a container and observing the outcome. There was great excitement as the yeast began to thicken, bubble and rise.
To prove the point even further we conducted a joint class experiment, using the same basic method but adding a deflated balloon to top of the container. We were all fascinated as we watched how the balloon inflated as the yeast came alive. Certainly very sound proof of how the yeast can be revived.
We concluded the lesson with each pupil baking their own bread. They definitely appreciated their newly acquired culinary skills, as not a crumb of their bread was left.
Experiment no 2 involved observing how the stem of a plant transports water (as well as minerals and nutrients) to the other parts of the plant.
For this experiment each pupil was given a white flower to place in a glass container of water. Into the water was placed different shades of food colouring. The flowers were then left to stand in the solution for a few days.
The children who had chosen to use the blue and green flavouring were delighted to see their flowers had definitely had the biggest change. The white flower now had changed to a very light shade of the green and blue.
It is a joy to watch how enthusiastic the pupils are when we carry out these experiments and how much they learn from them. We look forward to conducting many more over the course of the year.
