Eden hosts an Eco conference.

Last week Eden held a most successful Eco Conference, where we showed interested schools how to go about making their school more green. We had a number of speakers to inspire them. Thank you Mrs van Elden for organising this worthwhile event.

Mrs van Elden welcomes our guests and explains
about our Eco Container.

Mrs Padt is the driving force behind this
garden

Here is what some of our pupils wrote about what they learnt on the day.

As you all know we at Eden College had had an amazing Eco conference.
We had many different people from different schools that had come to listen and wanted to get involved.
The very first speaker was a lady from the organization of “Eco-Schools”.
Her name is Charissa. She gave a wonderful speech on how to get other schools involved.
She wanted to make other schools Eco-Schools.
A lot of the people that had attended learned many new things.
Many schools are now going to participate in this project.
She was very enthusiastic and gave a lot of information for us to consider. You could see that she really cared and with that, I think we should all support Eco-Schools. After all she is really doing us a favour. She cares about the environment she, cares about our Earth, she cares about our planet.  I think we could learn a thing or two from her.

We need to learn to take care of our planet, to make it last, to make it a beautiful place and it’s not too late. We can all still make a difference it not too late IF we put our minds to it. We can accomplish anything and everything.

16 schools came to visit Eden for the Eco-Conference, on the 18 March.  Mrs Mazzoni spoke about the Eco-Club.  Mrs Mazzoni holds this club on Wednesdays for anyone from grade 4 to 7. At Eco-Club, the children do activities such as:
·      Working in the Worm Farm.
·      Going down to the vegetable garden.
·      Making posters to put around the school
The children also do art activities. The table cloths at the conference where made by the children. They also make bird feeders and go on outings such as the annual beach clean-up.  They also go to places like the butterfly farms and to Botanic Gardens and so on. Mrs Mazzoni also organizes to have “Tree Identification”. The children walk around with an expert and identify the different types of trees. They run the worm farm and help organize recycling.

At the Eco Conference that took place at Eden College on the 18th March Mrs Maree talked about how she uses recycled things for her art lessons. She is working on a wind farm project with the grade sevens. She uses old fabric, recycled news paper and paper. Once in a while she asks for old teddy bear for the orphanage and she provides them with new toothpaste, tooth brushes and more.  Last year she asked for old slippers to make fish out of them. She sometimes shows the younger children photos to copy on and she likes using scrap paper from the classes instead or printing new paper for paper pallets.
Once the paper pallets are used she sends it down for recycling.
Last year she painted a picture of a jojo bin with the grade 7s, she then entered a competition and Dorina Cherneva won 150 000 for the school. Eden used the money for an eco container and it was named Dorina’s eco diner. Thank you.

Here at Eden Collage we are very against the Rhino crime issue. We try our best to contribute to rhino organisations like Rhino KZN. We have started a campaign called ACTING FOR RHINOS. We have collected an amount of R44 000 towards saving our Rhinos .Here at our school on the 18 March we had an Eco-conference talking about Water, Rhino’s and Eco-schools.  What really caught my interest is the Acting for Rhino’s project. a woman named Micah for KZN talked to us about rhinos and how school can sign up to help  Rhino projects.

16 schools came to visit Eden for our Eco Conference on the 18th of March. We had many speakers who gave teachers and pupils different eco ideas. Mrs Rayner, one of our former teachers at Eden, spoke about how it is a lot easier and more environmentally friendly to eco blog eco-articles and stories that you have written instead of having a big thick file. This is one of the ways that we can save paper and trees. She suggested that teachers do an online blogging course. She showed us how our Eden blog page is set up. She suggested that older children also write articles for the blog.

Everyone enjoyed it and learnt a lot, judging by these responses..

"Thanks so much for the invitation to the Eco Conference. My learners and I enjoyed it very much and have come away buzzing with ideas that we can implement here. I will be motivating some of our other learners to come and get involved in your Green Fest in August so will hopefully see you again then"

Thank you so much for a lovely afternoon spent at Eden yesterday! We left
feeling inspired and energised and were especially impressed with your
enthusiasm and generosity in sharing your ideas.

We look forward to coming to your Eco Fest and wish you well with your Eco
projects in the meanwhile.

Nature and biodiversity: Gardening with Grade 6

On Friday the 27th of February, the Grade 6's had a chance to work in the garden, doing their part to make Eden College just a little bit brighter and even learning a little something along the way.

They started by collecting the dead pods in the flower beds and they learned that even though the pods were dead, the seeds inside were very much alive. They decided to take those seeds and scatter them around the school and at home. They then got their hands dirty by spreading mulch and fertilizer around the flower beds.

All in all, they felt like they had really accomplished something meaningful and many of them have said that they were eager to see if the seeds that they took home would grow.

Healthy eating: Solar cooking with Grade Four

The grade fours were delighted to discover the efficiency of solar power when  we used our solar cooker one warm morning. We cooked beans, carrots ad mini mealie corns in our pot and had a veggie feast just after three hours of solar power cooking. Effort: minimal, enjoyment: maximum

Global and Local Issues - Horn of Sorrow Production

The grade R's to Matrics assembled in the College hall on Monday morning to watch the 'Horn of Sorrow". This powerful production brings to the plight of our rhinos to the forefront. They will be travelling the country and have agreed to  contribute a percentage of the ticket sales to our 'Acting for Rhinos' campaign, as well as displaying the banner at each of their venues.

Healthy eating - Grade 7 Assembly

Displaying DSC_5299.JPGThe grade 7's performed an assembly on Healthy eating.  We focused on the fact that your bodies need the right fuel in order to function properly and compared it to running a car.  You can't run a car on cakes or sweets or any kind of food...you need the right petrol.  Just like our bodies need healthy foods to work properly.  We sang a song that we made up with the tune of "All about the bass" called "All about the Fruit and veg"
Here are the words to that song:

Because you know we're all about the fruit, bout the veg no junk x3 (Chorus)

Yeah its pretty clear, eating healthy's good for you
and we're gonna eat it eat it, like we're supposed to do
cause we've got those brains brains that all the kids want
and all the right strength in all the right places

We see those magazines, advertising KFC
you know that junk aint good come on now make them see
if we eat healthy healthy, then they would stop and every inch
of you'll be perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah our teachers they told us to stop eating all those sweeties
cause we dont wanna get us a whole lot of cavities
you know we dont wanna be some stick figure barbie dolls
but eating healthy will make you grow up to be smart and strong

Chorus

We're bringing healthy back
go ahead and tell all of your parents that
You could get a heart attack
but we're here to tell you
eating healthy'll make you perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah our teachers they told us to stop eating all those sweeties
cause we dont wanna get us a whole lot of diabetes
You know we dont wanna be some stick figure barbie dolls
but eating healthy will help you grow up to be smart and strong

The Grade 5 children had loads of fun planting different types of veg and some fruit trees. They learnt why it is important to loosen the roots before you plant and they helped dig the tunnel to collect rain water.

They are looking forward to watering and looking after their plants and watching them grow.
