Nature and Biodiversity - Grade 8 Geography 2015

It has been a busy year for Grade 8 Geography students, not only did they visit Pigeon Valley in term 1 to do an in depth study of the ecology of the park, taking soil samples, doing species counts and bird identification watches, they enjoyed the environment and to think Durban was once like this in its entirety.

Last Thursday they visited the harbour.  The Grade 8 syllabus requires an in depth study of a South African port, and we obviously we choose Durban.  From the roof of the Sail Africa Youth Development Clubhouse it is possible to see the workings of the harbour, to track the incoming and outgoing tides, and to see the development that has occurred in what is Africa’s busiest port.  Sail Africa entertained the youngsters to a hour sailing adventure.  From there a visit to the Maritime Museum finished off the outing, the learners were able to see photos of what the port looked like prior to the development.
