Healthy eating : Yeast experiement in Grade 4

Our busy little scientists have completed various experiments during natural science lesson this term.
What great fun we had when we conducted our first experiment!!The aim of it was to see if yeast in its dormant state would come alive under the right conditions.
Each pupil conducted their own experiment by placing the powder yeast with warm water and sugar in a container and observing the outcome. There was great excitement as the yeast began to thicken, bubble and rise.
To prove the point even further we conducted a joint class experiment, using the same basic method but adding a deflated balloon to top of the container. We were all fascinated as we watched how the balloon inflated as the yeast came alive. Certainly very sound proof of how the yeast can be revived.
We concluded the lesson with each pupil baking their own bread. They definitely appreciated their newly acquired culinary skills, as not a crumb of their bread was left.
Experiment no 2 involved observing how the stem of a plant transports water (as well as minerals and nutrients) to the other parts of the plant.
For this experiment each pupil was given a white flower to place in a glass container of water. Into the water was placed different shades of food colouring. The flowers were then left to stand in the solution for a few days.
The children who had chosen to use the blue and green flavouring were delighted to see their flowers had definitely had the biggest change. The white flower now had changed to a very light shade of the green and blue.
It is a joy to watch how enthusiastic the pupils are when we carry out these experiments and how much they learn from them. We look forward to conducting many more over the course of the year.

Resources : Designing plant holders Grade 5

The grade 5’s have been exploring the wonderful world of plants!  One of the highlights was growing their own beans! Another was designing and making their own plant holders. They had to use recycled items and the creativity of the children just shone!  The outcome – beautiful, usable plant holders.
Well done Grade 5's

Nature and Biodiversity : Frogs Grade 2

Oh my word ....... what excitement there has been in Grade 2.  Nearly every child is out looking for frogs!!

Kyle was the first to arrive

We transferred the frog into a bigger container so all the children could have a good look. An interesting discussion took place while we observed and later read our class book on FROGS

Mrs Whillier arrived this morning with a Tree frog which she found in her bathroom! The children were able to notice the difference between the two frogs.

Resources : Grade 4 shakers

The Grade Fours presented an assembly on Wednesday 26th February where we highlighted all the features of our school we enjoy so much, under the banner of our year’s theme : “EDEN ROCKS!”

In poetry and verse, we spoke and sang our way through our lyrics that described all those aspects of our school we appreciate.

As part of the fun experience, we sang “We will, we will rock you” using the familiar tune plus drums and shakers. The shakers had been designed and made using recycled material. It was a most enjoyable experience for the Grade Fours, who developed their rhythmical abilities under the expert skills of some of their peers, who kept the pulse with the djembes and drums.

Well done, Grade Fours!

Nature and Biodiversity : Poggy Frog and the cows Grade 2

Mel and I were aware that Friday was Frog Awareness Day (or Leap Frog day as an article in Thurs Daily newspaper referred to it as)

So our theme for the week centered around the book 'Poggy Frog and the Cows'.

We read the book every day and as I explained earlier we introduced the concept of 'speech marks'. On Thursday we divided the class into groups of 4 and each child in the group had to write up a part of the story. We then stuck each section together to make a group booklet.

Kyle deep in thought

Jamie cutting up paper to make his section of the book

Proud authors!

Boys book was the best in the class

Hard working authors ...so proud of their result

It was a difficult task for some of them to understand as they wanted to write the whole story but eventually everyone got it AND I was a very proud teacher! Come in and read the stories ..... they are delightful.

Nature and Biodivrsity : Frog awareness Day at the Padts Home Grade 2

It's always such a treat when the parents and teachers can work together to create a learning experience that is beneficial to pupils.

I knew that Jo Padt (Connor's mum) is very knowledgeable in permiculture and has created a fantastic garden using this ideology.  With this in mind I approached her to see if she would explain 'Biodiversity' to our grade 2's using frogs as a starting point. She kindly agreed and the children all arrived dressed in green ready for an adventure. They had no idea where we were going....

so when we arrived at the Padts Connor could hardly believe that we were going to his home ....

'I'm at home but at school......so cool!' he remarked!

Jo settled them all down and briefly explained BIODIVERSITY..... a very long word .....

And then they were off to look for tadpoles frogs or toads...

Cameron and Ziyaad were thrilled to catch a frog each

Girls you can get some too!
