Local and Global Issues : Water Week ( Permiculture gardening)

The GRADE 1 decided to explore the different needed for plants to grow. The same plants - begonias - were all planted by separate groups in different places to see which would grow best.

This group had light and water

Global and local issues : Permaculture ( Water Week)

We decided as an Eco School that we would get each child in the school during Water Week to plant a plant in the school grounds as well as take one home. In Grade 2 we were so lucky as Jo ( one of our mums) oversaw the whole project. She is so knowledgeable and taught us so much.

After planting up our garden we then went to plant up a seedling to take home. Jo was so patient and eventually each child went home happily carrying a herb that they had chosen.

Thank you Jo for all your hard work at our school. I hope some of the seedlings are growing beautifully at home.

Global and Local Issues : Water Week

It was with great excitement that Eden embraced Water Week. All types of activities were seen in and around school.

The GRADE 3 introduced the concept of the Water Cycle through a wonderfully acted play.

The Story of a Water Drop
Mom:       My name is Mrs Drip
                 And this my family
                 Three fine boys are they
                 Son 1, son 2, son 3.
The first 2 are big drips
But this one is my Drop
                 He isn’t very good
When told to, he won’t stop.
Drip1:    We live deep down in the ocean.
Drip 2:   We must never go up to the surface.
Drop : Why? Why can’t we go up to the surface? Who says we can’t?
Mom : Now listen to me my dears. If you go near the surface, you might evaporate. So do as you’re told and stay where it is cool and safe.
Drip1&2: Yes mummy. We will be good.
Drop : Aaargh! Big drips! I’m going to explore and see what is at the top.     See you later.
Drip1: Huh! He didn’t listen to mummy!!!
Drip 2 : He will disappear from us.
Drip 1:You mean we won’t see him ever again?
Drip2: Well…. He will still be around, but invisible to us. That’s what evaporation is.
Drip 1: Please tell us more. I don’t understand.
Mom: Let me explain. Evaporation means that liquid water changes its form to become water vapour. Like the steam coming from a boiling kettle.
Drip 2: Oh! So he’s still around here?
Mom: Yes my dear. He is still here but in another form. He is no longer liquid, he is gas.
Drip1: GAS! You mean like THth.?
Mom : Not bad gas, he is water vapour, up in the air.

Drop : This is great! I can fly and no-one can see me.
Cloud 1 : Hey! You’re new around up here. Be careful where you’re going.
Cloud 2 : Don’t bump into us or you’ll cause a big storm.
Drop : Ouch! I thought that this would be fun, but it’s cold and scary.
Cloud 1: Watch where you’re floating! You mustn’t bump around.
Cloud 2: Silly you! Don’t you know what you’re doing? You’re causing an electric storm.
Chorus : I hear thunder
            I hear thunder
           Hark, don’t you
           Hark, don’t you
           Look at little rain drop
           Look at little rain drop
           He’s iced through
           He’s iced through.
Drop: Oh No! I’m a hail stone!
I’m falling down because I’m so heavy.
         Now I am solid ice!
Chorus: He’s goin’down
           We’re shouting Thunder
           He’s going to move
            He’s going to dance.
Drop: This is crazy! First I was liquid, Then I was gas and now I am solid.
All 3 forms of water in 1 day.
Chorus : Look at him fall,
            Look at him drop
            Look at him bounce
Down the hill into a river.

River: Welcome Drop. Come and join us in our journey to the sea.
Drop: I’m water again! YaY!
Hi! Everyone. You mean you will take me home to my mommy and   brothers.
River: Oh yes we will……. That’s where we are going if we can get past all  the pollution.
Pollution: No, No, you won’t. We will see if we can throttle you first.
River: Glug, Glug. Please let us go. Where did you come from.
Pollution: The factories sent us into the river. We will take over until all the water is ruined. Sorry for you!
Drop: Help!Help! Somebody save us. Help!
Pollution: No one is listening. You’ll never get passed us.
Eden Eco Kids: Here we come. We will clean this water. Quick, filter it fast. Clear out all the rubbish. We can do it!
Drop: Save us Eden Save us.
River: Gulp. Gulp. Quick. All the fish are dying. We need your help.
Drop: The pollution is clearing. We’re almost clean. I can smell freedom.
River: Thank-you Eden. You have saved the rivers life. We can breathe again.
Drop: We’re on our way. Yahoo!

Drip 1: Mommy can you feel the cool fresh water flowing from the river?
Mom: Yes Dear. That is lovely clean, fresh water flowing down from the mountain tops.
Drop 2: Mommy, I think I can see our brother Drop coming towards us.
Mom: You’re so right! He’s much bigger now, but it’s him alright.
Drop 1&2 : Welcome back home. Where have you been? We can’t believe you are safe.
Drop: I’ve been on a very exciting journey. Let’s just say that I’ve travelled the WATER CYCLE.

They also explored Mudskippers and Fiddler Crabs

The GRADE 1 - 3 watched a show called ' Journey past the Sun. It is a story about a young girl who travels to find a magic water pot for her people to avoid a drought.

The GRADE 4 - 12 even had their gala during the week. The tables were appropriately decorated to make supporters aware of WATER WEEK.

The GRADE 2 had great fun exploring water filtration. They all made their own sand filters which they then went to Botanical Gardens to test using the water from the lake.
